Available is a stunning yakutian knife made from stunning ancient bog oak

The Sakha Republic, or Yakutia as it is also known, is a vast area of eastern Siberia. The republics area is roughly a third of Europe´s landmass, while less than a million people live there. It is one of the most hostile environments in the northern hemisphere with temperatures of -35C being common in the wintertime, and temperatures downwards of -60C are frequently recorded. In this extreme environment, the Yakutian people have developed their own way of living. In this constant fight for survival, the Yakut knife was born. While the origins are still unsure, it is believed that the shape came to be by someone splitting a bone lengthwise, sharpened it against a flat rock, and using it as a knife. Traditional Yakutian knives are forged by hand into the same shape they have had since then.

Blade: The blade has been hand forged in carbon steel and is just over 60mm in length

Handle: The handle is crafted from a stunning piece of dark black bog oak from Lincolnshire and oak bark tanned leather from English last remaining oak bark tanneries.

In the rear of the handle has been inserted a disc of wooly mammoth tusk over 8000 years old. The insert has been cut from the outer part of the tusk known as the bark so it would have been in direct contact with its surroundings thousands of years ago!

The bog oak has been dug up from the Lincolnshire fens and carefully air dried then kiln dried before being quarter sawn to give a beautifully contrasting pattern.

Radio carbon dating has shown these ancient giant oaks to be around 3300BC.

Leather: The knife is being sold with a handstitched leather sheath and belt dangler set.

The leather is a dark brown vegetable tanned shoulder of leather so no harsh chemicals have been used in its production.

The brass fittings are solind cast brass. The sheath set is stitched by hand using a sadlle stitch technique and a thick tan coloured waxed thread.

To help keep your handle in good condition the knife includes a tin of Ash & Axe organic Cambridge beeswax and tung oil/ Linseed oil wax.
